From September 21 to 22, 2024, the Institute of Public Policy (IPP) at South China University of Technology held its 11th International Conference in Nansha, Guangzhou, themed "Artificial Intelligence and the Future World." The conference brought together artificial intelligence experts, scholars, and industry leaders from around the world to discuss frontier technologies of AI, international competitive situations, and global governance.

The conference convener, Professor Zheng Yongnian, pointed out in his opening remarks that artificial intelligence, as the core technology of the fourth industrial revolution, is profoundly affecting the way humans produce, live, and think. He believes that we are currently in an AI era, which represents the combination of three major advancements of human civilization. Professor Huang Kai, in his keynote speech, mentioned that artificial intelligence has stronger perceptual abilities than humans, and with the development of various robots, society will undergo tremendous changes. He emphasized that if artificial intelligence can be used for peace, social development, and healthcare, it will bring great welfare to mankind.
During the two-day conference, special topics such as "AI Empowering Economy and Society," "AI Governance and the Open World," "International Competition in the Age of AI," "AI Development in Asia," and "AI and Social Risks" were set up. Renowned scholars from around the world, including former UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Strategic Planning Hans d'Orville, Vice President for International Affairs at Lazarski University Tomasz Braun, researcher at the University of Birmingham Inga Ulnicane, and Director of the Comparative Economic Research Center at Seoul University Keun Lee, analyzed the challenges and opportunities brought by artificial intelligence from different perspectives such as technology, ethics, policy, and social risks. They also explored the multiple roles of AI in the transformation of economic and social structures.

In the roundtable discussion on "AI and the Industrial Revolution," guests from leading artificial intelligence companies such as Tencent, Baidu, and PlusAI analyzed the transformative potential of AI from multiple dimensions and delved into the relationship between AI and the "new industrial revolution."

This conference is not only a branded academic conference of IPP but also an important platform for IPP's international academic exchanges. As one of the national high-end think tanks and one of the most influential and well-known comprehensive think tanks in China, IPP, under the leadership of Professor Zheng Yongnian, adheres to the concept of "global perspective and Chinese sentiment." It actively embraces the opportunities and challenges that artificial intelligence brings to human society, continuously builds academic exchange and cooperation platforms, and contributes to promoting the innovative development of artificial intelligence technology and the sustainable development of human society.
